The Legion jumped out to an early 10 run lead fueled by
run-scoring doubles from Harry Streep, Pat Mooney, and Ed Lubas, and a home
run from Bill Dugan. Leading the 29 hit attack were Ed Kushner and Jeff
Baier, both perfect on the night. Chipping in with multiple hit games
were Al Genova, Jim McCullough, and Gene Antonucci. |
Molly Maguire’s 17, Awnings Galore 16 |
In a see-saw battle, after Awnings had taken a 16 to 11 lead
into the 6th, the Molly’s scored 2 runs, as the game moved into the
final frame. A fine defensive play by Bob Ghiretti helped to keep Awnings in
check. Al Burton began the rally with
a legged out double, followed by hits from Vic Trindade and Ghiretti. Then
Dave Drechsel tied the game with a 2 run triple. After the next 2 batters
were intentionally walked, loading the bases, Pat Ahern hit a sacrifice fly
to score the winning run. Ghiretti had 4 hits (3 RBI’s), while Drechsel (2B,
3B, 3 RBI’s), Bill Hinkle (2B, 3 RBI’s), Vic Trindade (2B, SF) and Ahern (3B,
SF) all had 3 hits. Awnings, with 27 hits, were led by Bob Lorincz with 5
hits (4 RBI’s), Angelo Melillo (3B), Frank D’Antico, Gary Cuttler (two 2B)
and Neil Granstrand with 4 hits each. Ray Meigs added 3 hits. |
Sun Tavern 11, Linda’s Driftwood Bar #1/Linwood Inn 10 |
After falling behind 5-0 Sun Tavern rallied back led by 3
hits apiece from Tom Murray and Pete Osborn. Then, with the score tied in the
bottom of the 7th inning, Steve Falco led off with a single. Two outs later
Anthony Abbaleo lined a clutch single to center and Rich Polonitza blasted a
double to left center knocking in the game winning run. For Linda’s, hitting
3 home runs and turning a triple play, Jim Sydlo (2 HR) and Stu Lukowiak had
3 hits. Mike DiRienzo, Joe Menza, Jack Helfrich and Pat Enright added a pair
of hits each, and John Esposito hit the third homerun. |

For AJ, John Robertson hit a grand slam with Greg Hobson also
homering. |

Scoring 6 runs in each of the 2 first frames, the Lensmen were
led by Jerry Archibald, Kerry Gelb, Steve Splain and Bob Beiner with 3 hits
each. |

Helping support pitcher Andy Holup, who was making his first
start of the season, was Joe Menza, filling in at second base, the middle man
in 2 double plays. At the plate for Linda’s were Joe Sarica, Mike DiRienzo,
and Stu Lukowiak with 2 hits each while Jack Helfrich contributed a triple
and long sacrifice fly that scored 2 runs. In a game that was tight until the
5th
frame, Sun Tavern received strong pitching from Dennis Baker and stellar
defense by shortstop Joe Hrubash. |

CL&V held off a 7th inning rally for the “W”. They were led by Kerry Gelb, a perfect 4
for 4, and Bill Boyle and Bernie Maguire with 3 hits each. |

Awnings' bats came alive with 23 hits, opening up an 8-0 lead
after 2 frames. Angelo Melillo and Tom Pasko (HR, 2B, 4 RBI’s) led the
victors with 3 hits in 3 tries, while Brian Granstrand (two 2B, 3 RBI’s),
Neil Granstrand (HR, 3 RBI’s), Frank D’Antico (HR, 3B, 4RBI’s), Bruce
Crawford (2B), Gary Cuttler (3B, HR, 4 RBI’s) and Ray Meigs all had 2 hits.
For the Mollys, Vic Trindade had 3 hits (2 runs) and Glenn Zuhl also had 3
hits with 2 RBI’s. |
