UCSSL 2020 PLAYOFF RESULTS
50’s Divisions
Playoff Rounds for Week of August 23, 2020
Deegan Roofing 17, Linwood Inn 5
In this no score game until the 3rd inning, Deegan scored 13 runs over the next two innings to earn the W.  Roofer pitcher Peter Appolito led the defense and was backed up by impeccable infield play.  Scott Mugele was perfect at the plate with four hits.  Charlie Collins, Ricky McMahon and Doug Fischer added three hits each for the Roofers.  At the plate for the Innkeepers were Steve Lerner, Brian Latham, Ron Patterson and Tim Mulhall each with two base knocks. 
Jun’s Contracting 15, Douglas VW 8
Al Genova was the Crackerjack player of the game for Jun’s, going 4/4 and making SportsCenter-worthy plays in the outfield.  Nick Mennona was also perfect at the plate, with a home run scattering the soccer players in right field.  Steve Sterensak was 3/4 with a clutch hit and several diving plays at third.  Walt Patrylo and Dave Eckert provided solid defense and were each 2/3 with Eckert providing a timely tape-measure shot in the third inning.  Glenn Gang called a great game behind the dish.  Mike Hoffman played a nice shortstop while platooning with Rob Stratton who was steady as always. Douglas was led by Ed Rodriquez with 3 hits, as Hector Munoz and Rich Gaul also had key base hits. 
Phenomenal Boyz 16, Suspenders 4
This was a 4-3 game until the bottom of the 5th when the PB plated 6 and followed up with another 6 in the next inning.  For Suspenders, Rob Dlugosz was a perfect 3 for 3 including a 2 base knock, and Frank Verducci added 2 hits. 
Riverside Inn 18, Contact Lens & Vision 15
Riverside came from behind with a 9 run 6th inning and held on to defeat a stubborn CLV squad.  Pounding out 26 hits, the Innkeepers were led by John McClung with 5 hits as Brian Clark added 4 hits.  Al Dente and Tommy Wolansky had 3 RBIs apiece.
Advanced Financial 16, Cranford VFW 3
Advanced, pounding out 36 hits, rode Frank Mastrocola’s pitching and solid defense to victory.  Dave Martorano was a prefect 5 for 5 for the night. Pete Abene (long HR), Dave Grandmaison, Billy Hillyer, Jerry Isolda and Bruce Crawford added 4 hits apiece, while Matt Walsh and Al Feigenbaum contributed 3 hits each.  John Fiore, Dan Ravetier, Carl Gamba, Jeff Nicholls, Jim Capizzi and Dave Pringle paced the Cranford attack. Advanced wins the series 2-0 to move into the C Division Finals
Tamar Jewelers 17, Garwood Metal 9
Garwood Metal scored 6 runs in the third inning and 5 runs in the fifth inning to pull away from Tamar Jewelers and held on to even the series.  Carey Durrett and Dave Ball led a 32 hit GM attack with 4 hits each.  Ron Kulik, Don Montefusco, Bob D'Meo, Dave Lloyd, Jose Jimenez, Bob Greco and Rocky Pencinger added 3 hits apiece.  The 3 game C Division series is tied at one game each. 
Deegan Roofing 20, Linwood Inn 3
Scott Mugele led the Roofer 30-hit barrage by going 4 for 4 on the night including a long home run.  Contributing 3 hits each were Kevin Woodring, Farlan Alusik, Marty Bernstein and Doug Fischer.  Steve Barba's two defensive gems in left field were topped by teammate Charlie Collins' over the shoulder, Willie Mays at the Polo Grounds circus catch late in the game.  Pitcher Peter Appolito provided another stifling pitching performance for Deegan.  For the Tap House, Mike DiRienzo had 3 hits, while Tim Mulhall and Dave Dudas had 2 hits each. Deegan wins the series 2-0 to move on to the A Division Finals. 
Douglas VW 31, Jun’s Contracting 26
In a game with plenty of offense that ended early due to darkness, Douglas tallied 11 runs in the 6th inning to take the lead, overcoming a 6-run deficit.  Bill Buteau, Hector Munoz, Ed Rodriguez and Jimmy McCullough all had 3 hits powering the VW 30 hit attack.  Al Genova, the igniter for Jun’s at leadoff, was perfect at the plate and excellent defensively.  Glenn Gang went three for four, including a slow developing inside the park homer.  Nick Mennona and Steve Sterensak (HR) were each 3/4.  Mike Hoffman came off the bench for an injured Pete Costello and played error-free defense and was perfect at the plate.  Pete Matarazzo went 3/3 as well.  The 3 game A Division series is tied at one game each. 
Phenomenal Boyz 26, Suspenders 4
Suspenders, held to only 8 hits for the contest, had Pete Celia and Frank Verducci both with 2 hits. 
Phenomenal Boyz win the series 2-0 to move into the B Division Finals. 
Contact Lens & Vision 15, Riverside Inn 14 (8 innings)
Contact Lens came from behind with two in 7th and a walk off hit in the 8th. Riverside had an 8 run 3rd inning and had 19 hits.  Dennis Maluchnik and Tommy Wolansky had 3 hits apiece for Riverside. The 3 game B Division series is tied at one game each.  
Advanced Financial 26, Cranford VFW 5 
Advanced, pounding out 36 hits, rode Frank Mastrocola’s pitching and solid defense to victory.  Dave Martorano was a prefect 5 for 5 for the night. Douglas VW 19, Jun’s Contracting 9
Douglas was led by the outstanding pitching of Rich Gaul and the defense of Pete Arteaga and Tom Renna, shutting down the powerful Jun’s lineup.  Bill Buteau with 4 hits, while Hector Munoz, Gene Antonucci, Jim McCullough and Rich Gaul all had 3 hits to lead the VW offense.  Everyone in the VW lineup contributed at least 2 hits.  Al Genova capped off a great season going 4 for 4 and Mike McKenna was a hot 3 for 4 as well for Jun’s.  In addition, Nick Mennona reached base on three walks, Walt Patrylo was 2/3 as was Dave Eckert who sparkled on the bases all game for himself and as a pinch runner.  Douglas wins the series 2-1 to move into the A Division finals.
Riverside Inn 15, Contact Lens & Vision 8
Mario Fastiggi’s pitching and hitting, supported by 2 defensive gems by Tom Wolansky, advanced Riverside to the division finals.  John Llano and Al Dente both went yard to lead the Innkeepers attack.  Riverside wins the series 2-1 to move into the B Division finals.
Deegan Roofing 21, Douglas VW 3
Deegan ace pitcher, Peter Appolito, held the VW bats quiet and was backed up by an error-free smothering defense and a powerful offense.  Roofer Scott Mugele led the offense with three hits, including two long home runs.  Charlie Collins, Farlan Alusik, Tom Baldowski and John Garced also contributed three hits each in the victory.  Ed Rodriguez, Gene Antonucci and Pete Artesia each had 2 hits for Douglas.  Deegan leads the A Division Finals best of 3 series 1-0
Phenomenal Boyz 11, Riverside Inn 10
In a come from behind victory, the Phenomenal Boyz took the decision.  John Llano led the hitting attack for the Innkeepers by going 4 for 4 with 2 RBIs.  Al Dente had 3 hits including a two-run blast in the 6th to keep the game close.  Mario Fastiggi pitched well keeping the Boyz uncomfortable at the plate all game.
Phenomenal Boyz lead the B Division Final series 1-0
Garwood Metal 16, Tamar Jewelers 14
Garwood maintained a 10-5 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning only to see Tamar score 7 times to take a 12-10 lead.  Both teams exchanged 2 runs in the sixth inning before the Metal Benders scored 4 times in the 7th inning to take the lead for good.  Garwood Metal was led by Rory Caldwell with 4 hits.  Bob Greco added 3 hits and 4 RBIs.  Tom Straniero, Ron Kulik, Don Montefusco, David Ball, Tom DeRocco and Jose Jimenez chipped in with 2 hits apiece.  Garwood wins the series 2-1 to move into the C Division Finals.
Playoff Rounds for Week of September 6, 2020
 
Deegan Roofing 16, Douglas VW 8
Deegan Roofing completed an undefeated season and won their seventh consecutive UCSSL 50+ A Division championship.  Deegan pitcher Peter Appolito once again had a masterful night on the mound.  Leading the Roofers at the plate were Damon Roth (2B, 3B), John Garced and Mike Juchnik (2B, 3B) who all had three hits on the night.  Deegan Roofing wins the A Division Finals 2-0.
Phenomenal Boyz 25, Riverside Inn 13
Overcoming an early 10-1 deficit, The Boyz came back firing on all cylinders to earn the victory.  Phenomenal Boyz wins the B Division Finals 2-0. 
Advanced Financial 13, Garwood Metal 12
For AF, John Rachko ignited the attack with 2 doubles and a triple.  Pete Abene added a 3-run home run while Dave Martorano and Bruce Crawford contributed 3 hits each.  Frank Mastrocola limited the GM counteroffensive to 3 runs in the top of the 7th to preserve the victory. 
Advanced Financial 25, Garwood Metal 3
Jerry Isolda got the Advanced Financial attack started in the first inning with a 2 run homer and it was off to the races for Advanced.  Dave Martorano and Bill Hillyer each had 4 for 4 nights.  Matt Walsh and Bruce Crawford each added 3 hits for AF.  Advanced Financial wins the C Division Finals 2-0.
