OSCAR D. HARRISON, JR.
(November 29, 1945 – November 18, 2013)
From First Base to Home Plate, Oscar was a Remarkable man. On November 29, 1945, a baby boy arrived on earth. He was sent special delivery from Heaven above. Before sending him below, the Heavenly Father held him close to His heart, sealed him with a kiss and a promise "I will never forsake or leave you, my child. My heavenly goodness, grace and mercy will always follow you".
The baby boy arrived in VA, to his parents, Arlisher Harrison and the late Oscar Harrison, Sr. He grew
up to have qualities of wisdom, respect, dignity, integrity and love deeply
embedded in him. As the baby grew, he continued to possess his God-given
qualities. He later was joined by two brothers, Orlando and Herbert and his
sister, Arleatha, whom he fondly called
"Sis." then more sisters, Cynthia, Crystal and Willma
Harrison Carey.
Throughout
his childhood years, to those of an adult, Oscar never gave his parents any
problems or trouble. Oscar was a soft spoken, quiet but fun filled gentleman
who loved to keep family, friends, co-workers, and his beloved baseball
teammates. Oscar entertained with his friendly conversations. His co-workers
gave him the nickname of the "Mayor". He possessed deep knowledge on
multiple topics and loved using his computer to continue furthering his
knowledge.
Oscar was an exceptionally devoted husband, father
and grandfather delighted in doing everything for his wife, children and grandchildren.
His grandchildren and their friends lovingly called him "Pop". Oscar
took them everywhere in his van, which they named "Pop Mobile".
Oscar loved baseball!!! He played on three
different teams. Being with his teammates gave him great joy. If you ever
wanted to talk about baseball, Oscar was the person to go to. Baseball was his favorite sport and hobby.
Oscar
accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Metropolitan Baptist Church
under leadership of the late B.F. Johnson. It was at Metropolitan Church that
Oscar met and married Shirley, the love of his life. To this beautiful union
'Oscar and Shirley had three children Michelle, Cheryl and Leon.
Oscar’s foot prints had covered first, second, third
and home bases. Throughout Oscar's life, he never forgot that God was his
strength in all situations. Oscar spoke how thankful he was that God loved him.
On November 18, 2013 our
beloved Oscar hit his final Heavenly home run.
