John F. McCarthy Sr.
John
F. McCarthy Sr., 82, died on Jan. 5, 2010. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated
at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church in Mountainside. Interment was at St. Teresa's Cemetery in Summit.
Mr. McCarthy was the director of administration at Kean University
before retiring in 1992. Prior to that, he was with Baker and Taylor Publishing Co. in Hillside and Singer Manufacturing Co. in Elizabeth. After retirement, he worked at Rickel's in Union and The Home Depot in Vauxhall.
Mr.
McCarthy played and coached in the Union County 60+ Men's Softball League. He
was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Leyte, and
volunteered at the VA Medical Center in Lyons.
He was a past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus Msgr. Francis X. Coyle Council 5560 of Springfield. Mr. McCarthy was an usher and a member of the Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church.
He
received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Seton Hall University. Born in Plainfield,
he lived in Union before moving to Mountainside in 1962. Mr. McCarthy was predeceased by his wife, Hilda Elizabeth (Rothschmitt) McCarthy; his sister, Eileen Gereity, and his brother, James McCarthy. He is survived by his three daughters, Kathleen E. Fruzynski, Patricia A. Henigan and Lisa M. Ross; his son, John F. McCarthy Jr., and four grandchildren, Garrett, Veronica, Christina and Eugene.
